Todomatsu 椴松 — Japanese White Fir Timber
Select White Grade | From the Northern Forests of Hokkaido

Japan's Northern Fir - Clean, Pale, and Stable
Todomatsu (Abies sachalinensis) grows in the cool northern forests of Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost island. The slow growth in cold conditions produces tight, even growth rings and a pale, almost white grain that finishes exceptionally cleanly with clear or oil-based coatings.
Where Hinoki and Sugi carry rich aromatic character, Todomatsu is quieter. Its mild, non-irritating scent and uniform pale colour makes it ideal for projects where the material should recede and let the architecture or finish speak. Clean interior panelling, refined joinery, and Scandinavian-influenced minimalist interiors.
It machines easily, planes cleanly, and holds finish well. For buyers seeking a stable, workable Japanese fir without the premium price point of hinoki, todomatsu is a sound option.
Todomatsu Grades — Know What You're Ordering
We only have one Todomatsu grade - Select White. This single-grade approach reflects the species' natural character. The grade range is not wide, and supplying anything below Select White is not consistent with Mokuzai's quality standard.

Where Todomatsu Belongs
Todomatsu is widely used an interior wood. Its natural durability is suited to protected interior environments, such as panelling, joinery, furniture components, and light construction. It is not recommended for exterior use or applications subject to sustained moisture exposure. For exterior cladding or applications demanding high natural durability, we recommend Sugi, Hinoki, or Karamatsu.
